Not Your Typical Fried Green Tomatoes

Have you ever watched the movie Fried Green Tomatoes? I absolutely love that movie! And the funny thing is...we decided to eat in front of the TV tonight since my dining room table was covered with a craft project my grand-daughter and I are working on...and guess what movie was on TV? Yep..Fried Green Tomatoes!

My recipe is completely different than what the Whistle Stop Cafe has to offer. I took an old southern recipe and changed it up a bit...ok..I changed it up a lot. But we love them this way and now I won't cook them any other way!

Not Your Typical Fried Green Tomatoes
*3 medium green tomatoes, cut in to 1/4 - 1/2 in. slices
*3/4 cup Italian Bread Crumbs
*1/2 cup all purpose flour
*1/3 cup light brown sugar
*1 cup milk
*1 egg
*1/2 cup veg. or canola oil
*2 TBSP butter or margarine

In a shallow bowl, combine bread crumbs, flour and brown sugar.

In another shallow bowl, combine milk and egg.
(Don't you just love my deep dish pie plates? One was my grandmothers and the other I found at a thrift store!)

Heat butter and oil together, (on medium heat)
in a medium size skillet.

Dip tomatoes, one at a time, in egg mixture,

then in bread crumb mixture, being sure to completely
cover the tomato in each step.

Fry in oil/butter mixture on medium to med/high heat
for 2 - 3 minutes on each side.

Remove from skillet and place on a plate covered with a paper towel. Turn tomato over to blot oil and then place on your serving plate. Do not allow the tomato to stay on the paper towel for too long or it could cause the crust to come off.

ENJOY A LITTLE
TASTE FROM THE SOUTH!
